Barnburgh Main Orchestral Society
Introduction
Having been told that my Grandfather was a member of the above Orchestra I have done some investigation into it's history. Some of the small amount of information I have gleaned so far is due to the efforts of Mr. Philip Scowcroft, to whom I am very grateful.
History
The orchestra seems to have been formed in late 1916 or early 1917, possibly as a means of generating money to be used for war aid, and was intially composed of members from Barnburgh Main, Manvers Main and Hickleton Main collieries. At the time many of the local collieries had brass band or extended musical ensembles. It seems that in the inter-war years Barnburgh grew to prominence, with it's number growing to around 50.
In 1920 the Orchestra won the Silver Challenge Cup for the Best Orchestra in the Mexboro' and District Musical Festival competition.
